| The Computer Science department supports and encourages our students to consider including a study abroad semester as part of their curriculum. For more information about studying outside of the United States without delaying your graduation, please speak to your academic advisor and visit the college's office of Undergraduate Global Programs. |

Computer Science Natural Science Options (3 course units)
Students in the Computer Science major must take 3 course units of laboratory science. The first two units satisfy the general education requirement for science. These
must be taken at the major level for that field, e.g. a foundations course rather than a principals course. Students are required to take a sequence of either Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. It is highly recommended that students take the sequence in a single academic year, preferably the junior year.
Students in the Computer Science major are required to take an additional laboratory science course unit. This requirement can be fulfilled in the following manner. A student may:
- Take the first course in a science different from the sequence. For example, if Physics fulfilled the science requirement, the either foundations of Chemistry or Biology may be taken.
- Take an upper level science course beyond the GEAC sequence in that field, specifically excluding teacher training courses. This is an excellent way to fulfill requirements for a minor, or second major.
- Take an introductory course in the sciences such as Geology or Astronomy provided it has a quantitative component.
- A student minoring in Psychology may take the quantitative research courses typically offered only to Psychology majors, provided they receive permission from the Psychology Department to enroll in those courses.
- A student may petition the department for permission to substitute another course for this requirement.
Foreign Language Requirements (2 or 3 course units)
Two courses in a sequence in any of the modern languages are required if students opt for a langauge not previously studied in high school or another institution.
Alternatively, students continuing a foreign language previously taken in high school or at another institution must in general take three courses of that language in a sequence. However, this requirement may be reduced by taking a placement test in that language. Based on the student's performance on that test, 0, 1, 2, or 3 courses may be required.
Any course reduction in foreign language requirements results in an equivalent number of free elective courses, which must be selected from the areas of art, humantities, social science or history. Consult the department for details.
